Restricted extras
Each Ubuntu flavor has a specific set of restricted libraries to play music, videos and so on... If you plan to do anything else than working you should definitively install that package! ;)
Get the package for your distribution:
apt-cache search restricted | grep extra
Install, example for xUbuntu:
apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras
VLC
apt-get install vlc
Rhythmbox
This is an excellent audio player!
apt-get install rhythmbox-mozilla rhythmbox rhythmbox-plugin-visualizer rhythmbox-plugins
Quicktime
apt-get install libquicktime2
Cairo-dock
You don't need that on Ubuntu. Only on Debian, Mint and xUbuntu
Nice and useful dock to access your applications.
apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins cairo-dock-plug-ins-integration
Then, add it to startup:
- Launch cairo-dock, right click on it ;
- in the "cairo-dock" menu click 'add it to startup'
Alternative way of adding it to startup:
- Xubuntu > start menu > all settings > Session and startup > "application autostart" > Add
